Dirt Floor, No Problem

"For God will bring every deed into judgement, including every hidden thing whether it is good or evil" (Eccl.12;14).

Eugene stayed after school, so I told him that I would take him home. I drove my Camaro into the country down a windy dirt road. The road ended at a path with nothing in sight, and I walked with Eugene about a half-mile to his home. It was a less than modest house, and when I went in, the floor was dirt, and the water came from a pitcher pump. I met his mom and there were several other kids in the family. That was a part of my first teaching experience in Arkansas in 1970. Eugene is probably retired by now, and I know that he went to college. When we're dissatisfied with our present state, it's tempting to blame the circumstances of our humble beginnings which were out of our control. We might tend to think that if only the cards we were dealt were better, we would stand a better chance for success... It didn't stop Eugene... After the part that is beyond our control has passed, we each become the products of decisions that we ourselves make through the freedom of our own will. We have on our own, thought, said, and done the things that make us what we are. Just as Eugene did not let his dirt-poor beginning deter him, our personal characters are not built upon our external circumstances, but what we have chosen to do with those circumstances. The character that we bring into adulthood is an accumulation of the decisions that we ourselves have made, and we must each accept responsibility for them... We can make a comparison between King Saul and David in the Old Testament. (1 Sam.13: 14; 15:28). When we look at their accumulative lives, we find that David, even with his warts, was a better man... It was not because he came from better circumstances, but because he made better choices. Especially in a spiritual sense, we are what we have chosen to be --- We are self-made people, reaping what we have sown... Way to go, Eugene....

Have a wonderful day... Make your little part of the world better.... Love mark Phil.4:11
