The Priority Game

"What the mind likes best, it studies most."

From "The Bruised Reed" by Richard Sibbes 1631

If we are not constantly careful, our priorities can become skewed. It is at this time that we become vulnerable, because being honest enough with ourselves may get more difficult. The young man that we find in Matt.19:16-22 has been referred to as the "Rich Young Man" (or Ruler)... He comes to Jesus asking what good thing he must do to get eternal life. It seems that the young man has followed the Law that Jesus has told him about, but he asks again: "What do I still lack?" Jesus was easily able to see through the veneer the young man presented, and confronted him about his real problem... It had to do with the priority game... "If you want to be perfect, go, sell all your possessions and give to the poor, and then you will have a treasure in heaven. Then come and follow me" (V 21). The young man was very rich and it would seem quite obvious to us that his top priority was just that... His money! When we are asked what is most important, we will probably answer in terms of what we know should be most important.... The Lord, however, does not judge us by our ideals or intentions..."Don't you know that when you offer yourself to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey ---- whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or obedience, which leads to righteousness" (Rom.6:16). The Lord does not look at "coulda" or "woulda." He does not look at what we may say we our ideals or intentions are, but what we actually put into practice. Comfort zones can get us in trouble if they don't allow us to do as much for the Lord as we ought to... Instead of a scripture, today I used a quote from 17th century theologian Richard Sibbes... In that short sentence, he is telling us to get our minds right so that we can do the right things. The priority game of life is real. Lets all make sure that we are on the right track...

Have a great day... Let His light shine through you... Love mark Phil.4:11
