Church of Christ

The Arm Bone's Connected To The Hand Bone

"Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others" (Rom.12:4-5).

I have heard someone with a fertile imagination say that the church "is an organism, rather than simply an organization..." I think that's kind of catchy, don't you? You have probably heard a few sermons that talked about a church having many members just like the human body and I'd like to amplify on that theme just a bit. My title today is taken from that famous song "Dem Bones" written by James Weldon Johnson. Johnson was referring to the prophet Ezekiel (37:1-14) going into the Valley of Dry Bones and prophesying that Israel would one day be resurrected... Its not really an apt subject for today's devotional because the bones I am talking about are those live members of the the Lord's Body on earth.... The Church! "The arm bone's connected to the hand bone" can just as easily be talking about a laboratory skeleton as the living bones of a person's body... The skeleton is used as a representation of where the bones are located, whereas those in a living body can show the function... To use that phrase again, the skeleton is the organization, while the bones in a living body are the organism... The Lord's church is a wonderful mishmash of people with varying skill sets. It is not only important to appreciate our own function, but the function of others too. For the body to work properly this rise to one more level... The body must have members that fulfill their function! If a chain is as strong as its weakest link, the body is adversely affected by weak and inactive members and if the strong have to spend much of their time helping out, their work is hindered.... Lets be that arm bone or hand bone that does all the stuff its supposed to do, and even a bit more...

Have a great start to your week... Begin it with a RAK or two... Love mark Phil.4:11
