The Blessings Of Our Shepherd

"He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those who have young" (Isa.40:11). "He who scattered Israel will gather them and will watch over his flock like a shepherd" (Jer.31:10). "I will place over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he will tend them and be their shepherd" (Ezek.34:23).

As we see in today's verses, God promised a Shepherd to us in the Old Testament. Just as the shepherd would bring glad tidings to the cities of Judah, gather Israel as a shepherd does his flock, and feed them as a type of David, that promise was fulfilled for us in Jesus Christ... As it is revealed in the New Testament, Jesus is that Shepherd... He is the good shepherd who will bring other sheep into his fold. (Jn.10:1-16). He is the chief shepherd who has other shepherds watching his flock. (1 Pet.5:4). He is also the great shepherd who makes us complete through his blood. (Heb.13:20). This lovely characterization of a shepherd is revealing in how it pictures the blessings enjoyed by those who follow Jesus. Just as the shepherd fulfills his part of the bargain, we should always be reminded of the duties we have as his sheep. The picture that is painted about what a shepherd goes through to take care of his sheep is a poignant one. The shepherd makes sure that the sheep have food, water, and protection. Since sheep are not the most intelligent animals on the planet, they are in need of all those things, but they must be cooperative if they are to reap the blessings offered to them. Lets look at this relationship over the next two days so that we can see how this wonderful analogy plays out. Though we might not like being characterized as sheep, we certainly have all of their needs....

Have a great day... Let His light shine through you.... Love mark Phil.4:11
