Prove It!

"The Spirit of the Lord is on me. because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.... Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing" (Lk.4:18-19, 21).

In today's verses, Jesus had just returned to his hometown of Nazareth, and on Saturday he went into the synagogue and asked for the scroll of the prophet Isaiah to be handed to Him. He read verses 18 and 19 from the scroll and proclaimed that He was the one that Isaiah was talking about. Much had happened since Jesus had left his carpentry work with his dad Joseph. Word had probably filtered back to Nazareth about Jesus' miraculous doings... The people were under the rule of the Romans and were anxiously awaiting the Messiah to deliver Israel from oppression. They couldn't wait for the captives to be set free and all these wonderful things to happen... When Jesus showed up, read the verses and claimed to be the Messiah, they were ready for the healing and freeing to start happening. If you met someone you were once good friends with after 15 years and were told that he could now do something totally awesome, wouldn't you be tempted to say; "Prove It! The problem wasn't that they were asking to see miracles, it was that they were missing the point! Jesus referenced all those Old Testament prophesies to make the point that miracles don't just happen to remove all suffering from the world, and they certainly didn't happen for the amusement of the crowd. Miracles were meant to showcase God's glory! They were looking for what they could "get out of Jesus..." We must seek Jesus and accept Him for the right reasons... He is the Son of God and died for my sins. He is the mediator between me and God. He is my highway to heaven. Did he do miracles and were they totally awesome? Yes! He's already proven that. I want Him so that I can be freed from the guilt of sin. I want Him because He's my highway to heaven...
