Not By Ourselves - No Masks

"When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting...." (Matt.6:16)

In my teen class this past Wednesday evening, I put the word hypocrite on the chalkboard. We were to study the actions of the Pharisees, who Jesus called hypocrites more than once. In this case, it came from the gospel of Luke in which Jesus told his disciple to "beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy..." (12:1) I found it interesting to note that the word hypocrite came from the Greek word hupokrites which meant 'an actor' or 'pretender.' Often, these Greek actors would wear masks on stage. Eventually, this tern evolved into the word we know today and come to describe people who 'wear a mask' in their lives to hide who they truly are. Interestingly, 'hypocrite' (or mask-wearer) is the same word Jesus used to describe the Pharisees. I can't imagine be called anything worse than a hypocrite, but everyone takes on at least a subtle part of that trait if they don't allow people to get to know them. If we want to leave hypocrisy behind, we must give our hearts to the Lord and know that we shouldn't try to go on our Christian walk all by ourselves.... We must let the walls down and be ourselves with some people who love God the way we want love Him... When Jesus sent out the disciples to preach the gospel, (Mk.6:7) He didn't send them alone, but in pairs. Jesus never meant for us to try to follow Him all by ourselves.... No masks...

Have a great start to your week... Begin it with a RAK or two... Love mark Phil.4:11
