Peter Said What?

"Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. 'Never, Lord!' he said. 'This shall never happen to you!'" (Matt.16:22)

How fast can someone go from the pinnacle to the depths? As we shared yesterday, Peter had just made the great confession, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God" to Jesus. He was at the great pinnacle as he recognized exactly who Jesus was. The confession was so profound that Jesus responded; "Blessed are you Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but my Father in heaven" (V 17). I don't know about you, but if I were Peter I don't think my chest could have gotten any bigger... He had stated the truth and Jesus commended him with the highest compliment... "From that time on Jesus began to explain to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life" (V 21). Today's verse is Peter's response to Jesus' statement about His suffering and death, and Jesus chastised him for it. I guess that chest deflated a bit...Its always easy to throw Peter under the bus and talk about how bad he was about misunderstanding Jesus' purpose, but we actually owe him a big debt of gratitude. Its easy to over-analyze him because he was often the first to speak, but lets see what I mean here... If there's one thing we can learn from Peter here is that it is okay if we don't have it all figured out to follow and obey Jesus. Here is what is of the utmost importance: acknowledging that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God! Once we get that, we can learn everything else we need know along the way... Again, "thanks Peter."

Have a wonderful day... Let His light shine through you... Love mark Phil.4:11
