About Being Servants

"So then, men ought to regard us as servants of Christ and as those entrusted (stewards) with the secret things of God. Now it is required that those who have been given a trust prove faithful" (1 Cor.4:1-2).

Today's verses almost summarize the apostle Paul's take on ministry. He had just been dealing with certain divisions in the church as some thought they were "of" him, Apollos or Cephas. They were putting their leaders on pedestals, just after Paul had told them not to...."and you are of Christ, and Christ is of God..." (3:22) I think that today's verses lay it on the line about what Christians ought to be. First, Christians are to be servants. Jesus was quite succinct in His teachings to the disciples about this. On a particular occasion, James and John had asked Him to allow them to sit in the seats of honor when they were in heaven (Mk.10:38). Jesus responded this way: "You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave to all" (10:42-44). Going against what the world views as greatness, Jesus gives us His definition. We must be servants... We must be slaves to Christ and others... Whereas the world views servants at the bottom wrung of society, Jesus in His kingdom shows those who live as servants to be great. Lets make sure of this... Jesus made it crystal clear that being a servant was not an easy task, and Paul echoed that teaching. Lets look at the courage and responsibility of servitude over the next few days. I hope that we will find it to be a rewarding way to live....

Have a great day... Go about doing good... Love mark Phil.4:11
