Reading 101

"What shall I do to inherit eternal life?" (Lk.10:25)

Today's verse was a question from a lawyer approaching Jesus with the probable intent to trick Him. If you are familiar with this section of the Bible, the interview ended with the man asking who his neighbor was and Jesus telling the Parable of the Good Samaritan... I am really interested, however, in Jesus' response to today's question.. "What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?" Jesus turned the man right back to the written word, just as basically as possible.... Reading 101. Jesus asked the man to "read for content." Before the lawyer could expect the Bible to speak to his own situation and before he could expect it to arouse him to more fervent devotion or intense feelings, he needed to know what the Bible actually said. He needed to know the content. That is Reading 101.. Knowing what the Bible says is fundamental because a person cannot apply what he or she does not know. Gaining personal guidance from the Bible is a slow process that requires a lifetime of meditation. In my years of teaching I found that kids learned at their optimum when they were able to answer their own questions through their own research process. After Jesus referred the lawyer to the content of the Bible, he answered his own question. Now to be true, the two passages the lawyer cited were not just the correct answers on a quiz... Jesus challenged him to apply the passages by relating the Parable of The Good Samaritan to him. I believe that God intends for His Word to be laid up in our hearts as a guide for successful living, but the beginning of the reading process is to know what the Bible says... Knowing the content... This is Bible 101... Its where we all need to start...

Have a great start to your week... Begin it with a RAK or two... Love mark Phil.4:11
