Advanced Reading

"Until I come, give attention to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation and teaching... Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that your progress will be evident to all." (1 Tim.3:13, 15).

I grew up at a time when medicines and "supplements" were supposed to taste bad. If you are from my generation, you may remember a bottle of either castor or cod liver oil in the medicine cabinet. We were supposed to take a dose of it from time to time because it was good for us. It was a teeth gritting experience to get that awful tasting stuff down. Perhaps some people today take the same tack about reading the Lord's Word. Having learned that Bible reading is profitable, Christians may turn to a random passage, read a chapter or so and lay it down, having little knowledge of what they had just read. If asked, they might have trouble putting what they had just read into their own words. Now don't get me wrong, daily Bible reading and even meditation is good, but that's just Bible 101 and 102. To get to Advanced Reading, something else must happen. The apostle Paul tells his protégé Timothy this: "so that your progress will be evident to all." Reading for content and understanding only stretches so far... For reading to be truly effective, the reader must be edified... The reader must show growth. Those virtues called the "fruit of the spirit" (Gal.5:22-23) don't come by accident. By reading and meditating on God's Word, we are to grow in those attributes. Finally, in order for the reading of the Bible to be effective, reading for content, understanding, and growth are all necessary. Without all of them, there will likely be no increase of faith. There will probably be no real sorrow for sin and no moral purity, desire to serve, or fervor of love... Keep on reading, but remember why...

Have a wonderful day... Make your little part of the world better... Love mark Phil.4:11
