Knowing Our Heritage

"When Moses saw it. he marveled at the sight,; as he drew near to observe, the voice of the Lord came to him, saying, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Jacob.' And Moses trembled and dared not look" (Acts 7:31-32).

The words of today's passage were spoken by Stephen as he recounted the "history of the Jews" before the Sanhedrin. The wonderful acts of God that are encountered in the New Testament were built on a rich history that stretches back to the beginning of time. When Jesus began His ministry, there was no introduction of a "new God" to the world, and no new concept of God. He did not offer new revelation about the God who had spoken through the patriarchs, Moses and prophets of the past. He did offer this: "No one knows the Son, except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son..." (Matt.11:27; Jn.17:25). God, during the course of Old Testament history, revealed Himself to Abraham in ways that Noah did not know. Moses knew more about God than Abraham, and Isaiah more than Moses... We trace this rich history to Jesus Christ, through whom He revealed Himself through His purposes, holiness and His kingdom, as he had never done before. The progress of God in the Old testament is a necessary backdrop for those who want to know want to really know the Son of Mary... The apostle Paul put it in perfect perspective when he wrote this: "These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings to us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come" (1 Cor,10:11). A Christian of any age does the right thing by acquainting himself or herself with our God, who revealed Himself through Abraham, Jacob, Moses and countless others. It helps us to comprehend the Eternal God through Jesus Christ. It explains our heritage. Things about our birthright tomorrow...
