The Poltergeist

"While they were still talking about this, Jesus Himself stood among them and said to them, 'Peace be with you.' They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost" (Lk.24:36-37).

Jesus had an impeccable sense of timing. Just as the two people who had seen Jesus on the road to Emmaus were reporting to the Eleven what they had seen, He appeared in the middle of the group. By the way, poltergeist is a German word for "noisy ghost," and they thought they had seen one. The disciples were startled and frightened, so Jesus did what He does the best and comforted them. "Peace be with you..." He gave them the opportunity to touch Him and see the hands and feet that had been nailed to the cross. "A ghost does not have flesh and bones," He said and He ate some broiled fish with them. Eventually, the apostles believed that Jesus was really standing there with them. It was not a ghost! They hadn't all simultaneously lost their minds. Jesus was back from the dead! The apostle John adds bit more spice to the event by letting us know that Thomas was not around for Jesus' appearance. He received the unfair nickname of "Doubting Thomas ," but as with the other apostles, he believed. This is a wonderful story, but what does it have to do with us? This is our word of encouragement today... We didn't get to witness this event, so Jesus gives us these words of assurance... "Blessed are those who have not yet seen and yet have believed..." (Jn.20:29) I don't know about you, but I count myself fortunate to be among this group. No poltergeist here... Jesus was and is the real thing...

Have a great day... Let His light shine through you... Love mark Phil.4:11
