Every Thought


"Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is --- his good, pleasing and perfect will" (Rom.12:2).

The apostle Paul, in 1 Cor.10:5, told us that we are to take every thought captive to make it obedient to Christ... It is obvious that our actions are dictated by what goes on in our minds, so the big problem seems to revolve around how to take our thoughts captive. We must learn to capture the negative thoughts that would lead us astray, and this can only take place when we have a renewed mind. Today's verse is one that you have probably read many times, but perhaps not from this context... A renewed mind comes from a heart that has been captivated by the love and grace of Jesus Christ. It is only then that we can take every thought captive and obey Christ...Taking a few thoughts captive is difficult in itself, but we are called to take every thought captive. So... How do we even begin to do this? It is only when our minds are renewed that we are able to think Godly thoughts. Paul gives us one more suggestion about getting our minds right... "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable --- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy --- think about such things." (Phil.4:8). Paul says that we should fill our minds with good stuff... He finishes in the next verse by telling us to put these into practice. The combination of virtues listed here is sure to produce a wholesome thought pattern, which in turn will result in a life or moral and spiritual excellence...
