That Envy Thing

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud" (1 Cor.13:4).

There may be no vice that is more malicious or meaner than envy. The faultfinder may be motivated by this trait defined as "discontent at the expense or good fortune of another." Just before the apostle Paul writes his famous list of virtues we have come to know as The Fruit of the Spirit, (Gal.5:22) he makes a list of really bad traits... ( Vs 19-21) Envy is prominent on that list... In finding fault in another because of envy, through a few ill-chosen words, a person's reputation may be severely tarnished. In Shakespeare's play Othello, Iago says these words: "He who steals my purse steals trash, but he who filches from me my good name, robs me of that which enriches him not, and makes me poor indeed..." In today's verse from First Corinthians 13, Paul points out that one of the unique things about love is that it is bereft of envy. A natural consequence of envy is that the faultfinder hurts himself as much as he does his victim. These wounds are self-inflicted and heal very slowly, if at all. When one is about finding fault through envy, chances for improvement diminish. Through "blindness," one cannot see the good in others because he or she are looking for evil. We would do ourselves good if we read today's verse and glean the four positive traits about love and kick the envy thing to the curb... Make it read; "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not boast, it is not proud...."

Have a great day... Let His light shine through you... Love mark Phil.4:11
