Gospel Implications

"For by grace you have been saved, through faith ---- and this is not from yourselves, it is a gift of God ---- not by works, so that no one can boast" (Eph.2:8-9).

One of the very powerful things that the gospel implies is that man cannot save himself... The concept of the "humanist" is that man is completely self-reliant, kind of like a "glory to man in the highest..." Now I may be the first to admit that I enjoy using whatever talents I have. (and avoiding those I do not) I hope that I am humble enough to comprehend the source of those talents, and wise enough to use them for the Lord... The idea of being self-reliant is old and goes back to the Book of Genesis, as the serpent sold it to Eve. The feeling of using our talents is a wonderful one, but the apostle Paul puts it into a bold framework in today's verses... Here is the very frank truth! Using the talents we have been blessed with to their greatest degree cannot save us... I wish I was the smart one that figured this out, but Paul, writing through the gift of the Holy Spirit is the one who has... "For by grace you have been saved, through faith...." Hmmmmm... Grace did it, but that's not all. It wasn't something about us that did it... "and this is not of yourselves, it is a gift of God..." And then the topper... Its not all about us utilizing those talents. (though we're supposed to).... "not by works, so that no one can boast..." By the way, you might want to read Titus 3:5 that says essentially the same thing. The truth of the matter is this; Man cannot save himself intellectually, socially, materially, educationally or any other way you can think of, but only through the gospel message of Christ. What an amazing gift...

Have a great day.... Let His light shine through you... Love mark Phil.4:11
