The No Hitter

"Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do; Forgetting what is behind and straining for what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ" (Phil.3:14).

On Saturday, Cole Hamels, a pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies, threw a no-hitter. For you non-baseball folks, that means that no one on the Chicago Cubs reached base by way of a base hit. It was not a "perfect game" because Hamels walked 2 batters, but he was able to retire 27 batters in a row without giving up a hit. To put it into perspective, the Phillies have been a franchise since 1883, and this is only the 13th no-hitter in their history. Hamels is the Phillies best pitcher, and ironically, the last two games he pitched were among the worst of his career. Perhaps he was able to take the apostle Paul's advice in today's verse about "forgetting what is behind and straining for what is ahead..." In a post-game interview, he talked about two things I felt that I can apply to our Christian lives... Because of those two poor performances, he spent extra time last week working on improving what he thought was wrong. Though we cannot change things in our past, we can make improvements today to get better. We can look at some mistakes we made and resign ourselves to not make them again, always "pressing toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me..." Another thing he mentioned was "staying in the moment..." If we want to pitch a no-hitter today, 27 outs must be recorded. There aren't any shortcuts... We have to stay on task, recording those outs as they come.... One at a time and in the moment... At the end of the day we can look at today's verse and see how we did... I apologize if you didn't get all of my baseball lingo today, but I must extend the metaphor just a bit farther.... Have a great game today....

Have a wonderful start to your week.... Begin it with a RAK or two... Love mark Phil.4:11
