No Inflagate Here

"I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first, will have nothing to do with us. So if I come, I will call attention to what he is doing, gossiping maliciously about us. Not satisfied with that, he refuses to welcome the brothers. He stops those who want to do so and puts them out of the church" (3 Jn.9-10).

Tom Brady and the New England Patriots got in trouble for supposedly having the footballs that were used in a game last season deflated. I use this questionable backdrop to talk about folks in the church that might suffer from "over inflation" like Diotrephes in today's verses. The attitude that engenders having an inflated opinion of one's self will always be detrimental to the church. It is this very attitude that put the tag "clergy" on people and elevated them to a status not mentioned in the Bible... "The eye cannot say to the hand, 'I don't need you!' And the head cannot say to the feet, 'I don't need you!' On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable..." (1 Cor.12:21-22). Diotrephes would not accept people who would not do things his way, to the point that he wanted to drum them out of the assembly...The church at Corinth had a problem with the special "Spiritual Gifts" that had been bestowed upon them by Paul's laying on of hands. Certain ones of them thought their gifts were superior to others and really superior to those who had not received them. Paul said this; "But eagerly desire the great gift," (V 31) and then wrote chapter 13 about love and put all of this in the proper perspective by writing; "Love never fails. But where there are prophesies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away... " (V 8). Lets always be sure that within the church, we leave our egos at the door. Over inflation will always lead to dissension and discord. Jesus' church is too perfect and pure for that...

Have a wonderful day... Do good and give God the credit.... Love mark Phil.4:11
