Being Stormproof Requires Fruit

"The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. Then he said to the tree, 'may no one eat fruit from you again.' And his disciples heard him say it" (Mk.11:12-14).

I find another lesson for us about a stormproof religion in Jesus' story about this fig tree... From what I understand, fig trees around Jerusalem normally begin to get their leaves in March or April, but do not produce figs until their leaves are all out in June. This tree was an exception in that it was already, at Passover time, full of leaves... My application of this story may be just a bit different, but we see here a tree that was rich in leaves. Having leaves is good, but with their presence should be the figs... I see the leaves representing the "formality" of religion, while the fruit is the more important "spiritual" part. If one wants to have a religion that is stormproof, he or she cannot fall into the trap of an empty profession of Christianity that is not accompanied by sound doctrine and holy living... At the risk of coming off as a heretic, baptism, attendance at worship and Bible studies, singing praises, and even the partaking of the Lord's Supper, are the outward forms of Christianity. They are, by their nature, essential to our spiritual growth, but are not enough to save us... All of these things are the leaves. The Lord wants fruit! The Lord is looking for the results that ought to accompany all of those things I just mentioned... "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control" (Gal.5:22-23). When Jesus looks at the fig tree that is our life, because the leaves have done their job, the figs should be abundant. This kind of life can weather any storm...

Have a wonderful day... Let His light shine through you.... Love mark Phil.4:11
