Those Green Pastures And Still Waters

"He makes me to lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside still waters" (Psa.23:2).

As we continue through the 23rd Psalm, verse two is such a comforting vision... To me, it is a wonderful picture of peace and contentment... I want to say, ahhhhhhh.... Green pastures and still waters.... It is Jesus saying this to me; "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matt.11:28). Rest is a dear pleasure in a world that is as hectic as ours is. As the Shepherd provides rest for his sheep, Jesus provides rest for our souls. This does necessarily mean a period of inactivity, but an inner calm and peace that can be found nowhere else. The sheep are secure because they trust that the Shepherd will protect them, as are we because we trust in the secure promises of God. "There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from his own work" (Heb.4:9-10). The green pastures and still waters are always there if we will allow the Shepherd to lead us to them. The metaphor here about water does not go unnoticed... For humans, water is the difference between life and death. To the Samaritan woman at the well, Jesus said this; "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life" (Jn.4:13-14). As we read the second verse of the 23rd Psalm, a transcendent calm should come over us, as we trust that Jesus will give us the rest and peace that we want and need so badly....
