Don't Make The Trade

"For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul? For what will a man give in exchange for his soul?" (Mk.8:36-37).

For many years, societies existed on a bartering system in which people exchanged different things to exist. Even our monetary system is based on trading an amount of money for a particular item. Many of us have probably bartered with someone over the price of an item before the final price was settled upon. It is against this backdrop that today's devotional about the soul is based. Jesus asks a point blank question, that we would certainly consider to be a rhetorical one... "For what will a man give in exchange for his soul?" The sad part about this question is the intimation that there are things out there that one might think have an equal value to the soul that one might trade for it... Before free agency in baseball, (1975) the only way for a player to change teams was for them to be traded. One team always thought that the player they traded for was better than the one they gave up. Trades wound up being either equal, beneficial to both teams, or lopsided... Jesus is saying that any trade made for the soul is a lopsided one. "Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell" (Matt.10:28). What are some of those things that people might barter for their souls? How about too much concern for everyday life and not enough work for the Lord... There might be those evil associations, or maybe not staying close enough to the Word. Perhaps it is a life of sin, or maybe one of ease... Whatever the trade, Jesus tells us that it is a bad one...

Have a great day... Make your little part of the world better... Love mark Phil.4:11
