Weeping Over Lost Opportunity

"As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it...." (Lk.19:41).

During the last week before his death, Jesus spent the night at the home of Mary and Martha. The following day, as he headed to Jerusalem, he stopped by the Mount of Olives and uttered the words of today's verse as he wept...In a little over thirty years, the Roman army would lay siege to the city and destroy it just as he predicted in Vs. 42-43. But there was something else that happened. "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing. Look, your house is left to you desolate" (Matt.23:37-38). Jerusalem (Israel) had lost her opportunities... "If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace ---- but now it is hidden from your eyes" (Lk.19:42). Jesus is weeping over Israel's missed opportunities. The laws of God were being perverted by the religious leaders of the day as they emphasized minor points of law while leaving out love, mercy, justice, and faith. He said that they "strained at gnats..." (Matt.23:24). They honored the graves of the prophets, and when the real one came they had him killed. Because Jesus offered them so many chances to accept Him as the Messiah and they rejected those chances, Jesus wept.... Upon leaving the earth, Jesus told us "to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father, and the Son, and of the Holy Spirit" (Matt.28:19). When we don't make the best of our opportunities to spread the good news, do you suppose that Jesus weeps?

Have a great day.... Let His light shine through you... Love mark Phil.4:11
