Missing The Warning Signs

"..... they resorted to a ruse. They went as a delegation with worn-out sacks and old wineskins, cracked and mended. The men put worn and patched sandals on their feet and wore old clothes. all the bread in their food supply was dry and moldy. Then they went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and the men of Israel, 'We have come from a distant country; make a treaty with us'" (Josh.9:4-6).

These Gibeonites were actually from a site just to the north of Jerusalem, not from a distant country. The Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites had come together to make war against Joshua and Israel... These folks from Gibeon in today's verses, having seen the strength of Israel, did not want to be killed so they resorted to trickery. To accomplish this, they dressed as people from a foreign land who had been traveling a great distance, rather than being lumped in with their surrounding neighbors who made war with Israel. It was a ruse of wisdom, born in desperation. They would rather make a treaty with Israel than to be certainly killed... Solomon was many years from being born, but his words still ring true... "Anyone who is among the living has hope ---- even a live dog is better than a dead lion" (Ecc.9:4). Israel missed the warning signs. The only credentials the people had to show that they came a great distance were dry moldy bread, old and cracked wineskins, and old clothes and sandals. Maybe the Israelites were so filled with themselves after some victories, that they missed the warning signs. Do we ever accept questionable evidence in our lives when it comes to making important decisions. God has made promises to us about this life and eternity. These promises are only to be realized if we live our lives without "blinders" on. We cannot allow ourselves to become involved with things that appear to be good, but are fraught with dangers. There may be some speed bumps along our walk, but we cannot allow ourselves to be tricked into doing things we should not do. Lets not miss the warning signs....

Have a great day... Do good and give God the credit... Love mark Phil.4:11
