Settling For Surface Answers

"How then can we make a treaty with you? 'We are your servants,' they said to Joshua. But Joshua asked, 'Who are you and where do you come from?' 'Your servants have come from a very distant country because of the fame of the Lord your God. For we have heard reports of him: all that he did in Egypt, and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan.... " (Josh.9:7-10).

The Gibeonites continue with their fabricated ruse, and in the next few verses they again make reference to their dry moldy bread and cracked wineskins. "And our clothes and sandals are worn out by the very long journey" (V.13). Have you ever been scammed? Have you ever failed to read the "fine print?" Have you ever wanted something so badly that you didn't do enough research in order to find out whether you were getting what you actually paid for? Joshua and the men of Israel asked only two questions of these men... "Who are you, and where do you come from..." There was no further talk with a people who wanted to make a covenant or treaty with them. Israel is about to sign on the dotted line without doing nearly enough homework. Lets take a look at what the Israelites did and did not do... "The men of Israel sampled their provisions but did not ask for the counsel of the Lord" (V.14). They took a cursory look at the evidence, but did not ask God to help them with their decision... Does any of this sound vaguely familiar to us. Have we ever become so enthralled with something that we were blinded by what was seemingly apparent. Then comes the dagger to the heart... We left God out of our decision... If we have ever had to live with a mistake, and we all have, we also know that the mistake could have been avoided with a little more inquiry and a lot more talking with God... Tomorrow, we look at the choice...

Have a wonderful day... Go about doing good.... Love mark Phil.4:11
