God's Forbearance

"Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God's kindness leads to your repentance?" (Rom.4:2).

I don't think I have ever used the word forbearance to describe someone, and this week I'm going to use it in describing an important attribute of God. Lets get on firm footing here and get a feel for what the term actually means. Forbearance can be aptly defined as "patient self-control." If I were using the word to describe a person, I would say that he or she shows restraint, and chooses their words carefully before they speak... The word is a cousin to tolerance, endurance, fortitude, clemency and restraint. The apostle Paul only uses the word twice in his epistles. Once in today's verse and in Rom.3:25. "He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished..." We err when we try to describe anyone with simply one word, and doing this for God is just the same. Suffice it to say, Jesus exercised forbearance also. He still cared for Peter, even after his three denials. On the cross he said, "Father forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing..." (Lk.23:34). I believe that as we learn more about the forbearing nature of God, that we will want to embrace the trait in our lives also. Just as God forbears those that seek him from pure motive or heart, we ought engender those characteristics.... This week, we will examine the term forbearance from many angles in hope that it will take on an important meaning for us...

Have a great start to your week... Begin it with a RAK or two... Love mark Phil.4:11
