Is It I?

"As they were eating, He said, 'Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me.' Being deeply grieved, they each began to say to Him, 'Surely not I, Lord' " (Matt.26:21-22).

Most of us recognize the setting of today's verses, as Jesus and His disciples are celebrating their last Passover together. It is the meal we've come to know as The Last Supper. In verse 21, Jesus announces to the 12 disciples that one of them would betray Him. I can only imagine the effect this statement must have had... Surely they were filled with sorrow and consternation, as this was coming from the one they had followed for 3 years. They looked around, they responded with a question that echoes through the corridors of time to us today. It is a deeply personal question, as each of them began to take stock of themselves by asking, "Surely, not I Lord..." The KJV version renders the question, "Lord, is it I?" It would have been an easy thing for each to say, "It is not I; is it Peter? is it John? is it James?" It actually might be reinforcing the belief that each is to be saved or condemned on his own merits, and not those of others... Each will stand on his or her own record. The question that the disciples ask will be the topic for this weeks devotionals, as I think it teaches the constant need of self examination and evaluation. Concerning the Lord's Supper, Paul writes this; "But a man must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup" (I Cor.11:28). Christianity demands that we take inventory of our souls... There are so many aspects of our lives that we need to look at to see if we are walking in a worthy manner. Hopefully, we will challenge ourselves to live a life worthy of our calling, so this week we will be asking ourselves that all important question, "Lord, is it I?"

Have a great start to you week.... Begin it with a RAK or two.... Love mark Phil.4:11
