Bad Trade...Tragic Loss

"Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands..." (II Cor.5:1).

There are plenty of losses in life that are bad enough. We would all like to have perfect health, financial security and relationships that are all wonderful. If we posed Jesus' question about what one would give in exchange for his soul in different terms, how tragic would it be. "What would it profit a man if he gains the whole world, but is not as healthy as he would like to be?" "What would it profit a man if he gains the whole world but isn't as financially secure as he hoped to be?" How about if we could not afford the best foods or drive the best car? And what if all of our interpersonal relationships were not humming along smoothly? All of these things can be inconvenient or uncomfortable, but they are not tragic... The loss of one's soul is a million times worse! The loss of the soul is tragic on two fronts. First, it entails the loss of many blessings here on earth, but it also means the loss of heaven... That is tragic! After the Ethiopian was baptized by Philip, it says this; "but he went away rejoicing..." (Acts 8:39). A loss of the soul means the forfeiture of life's greatest happiness, the loss of the most beautiful influence, the loss of fellowship with fellow Christians and the privilege of Christ-likeness... For such losses there is no compensation. Today's verse speaks about that eternal home that is prepared for those who follow Him. I love Solomon's words in Eccl.12:7; "And the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it." Is there a bottom line for all of this? I think there is... That which is our most treasured possession, our soul, endures forever. There is absolutely nothing on earth that is worth trading it for...Have a great day... Let His light shine through you...
