The Young And Old Alike

"You younger men, likewise be subject to your elders; and all of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for God is opposed to the proud but gives grace to the humble" (1 Pet.5:5).

Last week, the lessons were about obedience and submission. There was submission to governments, slaves to masters and to Christ, and now Peter is adding another important dimension.... Younger Christians, Peter declares, are to be subject to the elders, and that is the fourth dimension. You younger men, likewise be subject (submission) to your elders... Since the eldership as an office is in the immediate context here, Peter is most likely instructing younger Christians to be submissive to elders in the church, not to older men in general... Good leaders will always have a following, and folks looking for good leaders will do that following. Elders are to serve the Lord and the church with humility, not lording their authority over others. Just as Christians are to display their goodness to those around them, the elders are to guide by example. We come to a wonderful watershed verse next. It is a verse that we ought to have written on our hearts as a credo for life. "Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time..." (1 Pet.5:6). Peter goes back to the book of Proverbs to bring his point across; "He mocks proud mockers but gives grace to the humble" (3:34). I seem to remember one of Jesus' parables from Lk.14:7-10 in which he taught about a man seeking the best seat at a banquet. The lesson of the parable was this in verse eleven (11); "For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." Like his Master Jesus, Peter tells his readers that God will exalt those who humbled themselves. The Great Shepherd is the Lord Jesus, and those who humbly cast their cares on Him will find a God who always cares. To resist Satan, we need all the help we can get. Prayer, meditation and Bible study are great resources, but there is hardly a resource for spiritual strength that compares to the fellowship of fellow believers...

Have a great day... Do good and give God the credit... Love mark Phil.4:11
